Mighty Mona

Boqueron, Puerto Rico
We have pulled ourselves away from the DR and are in Boqueron, a funky little party town on the west coast of Puerto Rico.

Luperon, DR to Boqueron, PR
Between the DR and PR lies the Mona Passage, a strait that can be truly fearsome under the wrong conditions. It adjoins the Puerto Rican trench, the second deepest ocean trench in the world, it carries large volumes of water between the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea, and it has shallow areas that deflect current in odd ways, so strong winds can cause extremely steep and unpredictable seas. And so picking the right weather window is important.

Risso's Dolphin
Our window was so calm that there was no chance of sailing, so, except for dodging a couple of squalls, we had two days straight of uneventful motor-sailing along the north shore of the DR and across the Mona. We did not see any whales in the Mona, as many cruisers do, because most of our time in it was at night. However, we saw many pods of the largest of the dolphin family, Risso's Dolphin, which actually looks more like a small whale than a dolphin.

Anyway, we are moving on to "Gilligan's Island" on the south coast soon, so here are pics of this passage.

At first he liked being up forward...

Apparently lonely up there, he moved back with us later
and stayed for hours.
